Are you on track to achieve your goals in 2011? Do you wonder why, despite being committed and talented, you haven’t been able to hit key milestones or move-up the corporate ladder more quickly? Could your mindset be holding you back?

Many people are unaware of how powerful their mindsets are. Rather than focusing on what they truly want, their focus and “self-talk” is often on what they don’t want. For example, you may want to be successful in your career, but you’re thinking about all the obstacles in your way. Or you may want a new and exciting position, but you’re focused on the lack of good opportunities. Our thoughts are so powerful because they drive our emotions. Emotions impact the actions we take and the results we achieve. Consider, for example, thinking about things outside of your control, such as the poor economy or your company’s lack of growth. Naturally, emotions such as worry, fear and anxiety will be triggered, which is distracting and can thus compromise your results.

How to Take Ownership of your Success
So, the question is – how do we stay focused and on track to our career goals, and not allow our daily challenges to throw us off-track? One technique could be the way we focus on our goals.

In a study by Dr. Gail Matthews of the Dominican University of California, 267 participants from a variety of industries and backgrounds were recruited for a four-week research project. The participants were randomized into one of five groups. Group one thought about goals they wanted and achieved 43% of them. Participants in the other groups who were asked to write down their goals achieved 64% of them, or 34% more than those who just thought about their goals. The group that wrote and shared their goals along with actions and progress with a friend, created the highest level of success, achieving 76% of their stated goals.1

Certainly, the data supports the benefits of writing down our goals and tracking our progress to enhance our focus, momentum and success. Do you have written goals that you focus on daily? How much more empowered and successful could you be if you did?

“Since beginning mPWR10 our company has experienced phenomenal growth. We went from doing about $1M in revenue and we’re now at $20MM annually and this was accomplished in six-months time! mPWR10 helped me crystallize my goal, where I was going and reasons for not going in other directions. It helped me filter out and gave me permission to say no to all the activities that weren’t going to lead me to my goals and focus each day on teh key activities that will take me there.”

We are living in an era where so many companies have an urgent need to transform. Layoffs, mergers, reorganizations and all types of ongoing change are commonplace. To survive and thrive, companies need employees at the top of their game, who can innovate and excel. But uncertainty has instead triggered widespread employee worry and anxiety, which studies have demonstrated to have a detrimental impact on performance.1,2,3

Barbara Fredrickson, a leading authority in the field of Positive Psychology has extensively researched how emotions impact productivity and results. A study published in Psychological Science showed that in the face of obstacles, those with positive emotions were open-minded and saw more possibilities enabling them to generate ideas and solutions. In contrast, when those feeling negative emotions, such as anxiety or worry, faced a setback or problem they were more likely to close down and have difficulty coping.1

So if distracted by change and uncertainty, enhancing positive thoughts and emotions will allow you to be more focused, bounce back quickly from setbacks and accomplish aggressive goals. The good news is that science has demonstrated that you can enhance your positive emotions by practicing specific techniques.

How to Take Ownership of your Success
Next time you are feeling stressed by a challenge or obstacle, begin by listing what is good or working well in the situation. Notice how your energy shifts and your thinking becomes more open. You’ll be feeling more confident and creative and as a result more likely to find the best solution.

“Saying that I am positive is not enough, developing and sustaining the habits taught in the program is what made a difference to me both professionally and personally. During this challenging time of transformation in my professional world, I was able to focus my energy on my goals and daily activity rather than the negative energy that was on everyone’s mind. One of my goals was to be in the top 5% for my lead product; I reached my goal and am ranked 2nd position in the nation. Overall, mPWR10 assisted me to take better control of my day by planning things that were going to take me closer to my goal and pre-playing events prior to going to my appointments.”

MARCH 16, 2010 BY ZACK SLABOTSKY

Take a talented 6-7 athlete with a pure shooting stroke, add hard work and determination, sprinkle in a new mindset and a few fortuitous breaks and what emerges is the feel-good story of the men’s basketball team. After spending his first three years at Cornell mired on the bench –– he played just over 100 minutes total during the three seasons –– senior tri-captain Jon Jaques has perfected that formula. Seemingly out of nowhere, Jaques has emerged as a starter and vital cog on a Red basketball team that has taken the Ivy League –– and the nation –– by storm.

“It’s the most amazing situation I’ve ever coached where someone who’s deep on your bench, not only becomes an integral part of your team, but [becomes] a kid who makes you substantially better,” said head coach Steve Donahue. “I give [Jaques] a whole lot of credit for the three years that he worked so that, if this opportunity came, he was ready.”
